Lever Room Insight: September 2023

Measuring & Verifying your Carbon Footprint

To stay within a liveable climate, emissions need to peak by 2025 and halve by 2030. Calculating carbon footprints for both products and/or organisations, enables us to build support and create emission reduction goals and plans.

Certification from The Lever Room tells the world you’re serious about meaningful climate action that results in real world positive impact.

The measurement process provides a detailed analysis of your product, organisation or investments resulting in the production of a carbon emission inventory report. In producing the report, we make sure your carbon journey is grounded in robust climate science, measurement best practice and has the credibility to be internationally recognised at any of our three certification levels. Our processes support faster yet accurate assessment of both Scope 3 emissions and carbon removals.

The Lever Room also has deep experience in developing Climate Action Plans. We focus on pathways that most rapidly reduce your emissions, at lowest cost, and are designed to limit unintended social, economic or environmental consequences.

2023 Edition: Climate Solution Directory

A growing number of organisations are helping to power up New Zealand’s transition to a low carbon future. Given the large amount of interest since releasing New Zealand’s first climate ecosystem map and Directory in 2022, we’re providing a 2023 update.

This map was created to help uplift co-ordinated climate action at scale across New Zealand. It demonstrates the growing momentum from iwi, business and communities actively contributing practical climate solutions.

These courageous organisations are already helping to lead us to a better future.

Did we Build Back Better?

In March 2020 New Zealand was heading into lockdown The Lever Room felt a responsibility to help lift up and convene ideas focussed beyond the immediate response, to frame a pathway to recovery and resilience for New Zealand.

To this end we conceived a framework to achieve three core purposes:

  1. Optimised Recovery

A practical set of organising principles to help guide decision-making for better outcomes.

  2. Holistic Wealth

Examine how public sector investment might assist valuable businesses to grow long term holistic wealth.

  3. Actionable Projects

Apply a systems-thinking lens to lift up actionable projects that create real solutions for the challenges we face

It’s been 3 years since the discussion paper was published and we’re delighted that this work has helped enable long term positive outcomes. Specifically, the work influenced local and central government priorities; while the principles for optimised recovery were built into economic development and Iwi priorities; purpose-led enterprise and the national conversation. The principles continue to influence business decisions today. A short impact report detailing those entities and activities is available on request.

Our Build Back Better Framework provided practical avenues for the integration of methods and approaches to Build Back Better. This term has come to mean taking the opportunity to solve issues of today while supporting the collective wellbeing of communities and the environment over the long term.
